Hands-On Experience in the Ancient Practice of Sericulture

It was a crisp December morning when the sixth grade of Wagor Bilingual Elementary School embarked on a journey to Miaoli’s Educational Park for Seri-Apiculture and Entomology. The students had been reading about the history of silk-making and the historical Silk Road, so they were excited to get a hands-on experience in the ancient practice of sericulture.
At the educational park, the students learned a lot about the process of raising silk worms and making silk, along with information about bees, insects, agriculture and the dangers of pesticides. The highlight of the trip was being able to feed and hold some real live Bombyx mori silkworms. The wriggly critters put a smile on most students faces, though a few screams and “yucks” were also elicited.

With many thanks and more smiles, the students said goodbye to the excellent staff in Miaoli. They were even able to take some silkworms back to school with them, along with their special food of the leaves of the white mulberry tree. It was a day of hands-on learning the sixth grade will not soon forget. The silkworms they brought back are busy munching away even now as a reminder of their trip.
